About the Book

In the heart of Montreal, where cobblestone streets meet modern traffic, Doyle O’Shaughnessy runs the last stable in Pointe St. Charles. When calèche driver Jacqueline dies of a heart attack, her ornery draft horse Groucho—seventeen hands high with a perpetual scowl—becomes Doyle’s reluctant responsibility. The seventy-seven-year-old stableman, illiterate but wise in the ways of horses, begins the slow work of gaining Groucho’s trust through patient daily visits, sugar cubes, and one-sided conversations.

As Doyle works to retrain the grieving horse for delivery work, Jacqueline’s estranged daughter Louise enters their world, escaping an abusive marriage and discovering unexpected purpose. Together with Mowbray, a teenage apprentice finding his way, they create an unlikely family in the stable’s dimming light. But urban development and city regulations threaten their sanctuary, and Louise’s past isn’t finished with her.

Based on true events, this poignant novel explores how the most profound connections often develop between the most unlikely companions. Through seasons of patience and small kindnesses, Doyle and Groucho prove that transformation is possible at any age—and that the smallest kindnesses can change a life.
