Today, we received notification that Google no longer likes our SSL certificate on the Grey Gecko Press online store. This came as something of a shock, since we hadn’t changed anything about our store that would cause this to take place.

We followed up with Shopify (our store’s hosting provider) as well as Google, and what we discovered was that as of today or yesterday – recently, anyway – Google has decided that instead of checking the SSL certificates of online stores based on their checkout pages, they’re now going to check based on their main pages.

What does this mean to our customers/readers/fans/followers/book-lovers? When you go to our site through a Google search only, you may see a warning message that looks like this:

chrome_ssl-error

Pretty scary-looking, isn’t it? Likely, what it’ll say is that you’ve gone to http://greygeckopress.com/books, but the site registers as “grey-gecko-press.myshopify.com” or something similar.

The short explanation is that there is absolutely nothing to worry about with our site or its security. Google flipped a switch without talking to some vendors, and now those vendors (and their merchants, like us) are in a tizzy because our customers – that’s you – get a warning before going to our site.

To be 100% crystal clear: There is no danger to you, your computer, or your information (of whatever kind) from accessing our site. You’ll still get the same security and safety as you’ve always had, we’ll still provide you with great books, and you’ll still be supporting indie authors.

Nothing has changed. All this techno-babble will get worked out very soon. The shopify folks told me that they saw a spike in customer service calls today of over 1,000% due to this issue, so you know they’re working on getting it corrected.

So feel free to click through and visit our site, knowing you won’t have to worry about anything. But if you do have a question, feel free to ask – just email support
